Together (2025) [Movie Review] — A Grotesque Love Story That Actually Hits

fdsf

Together is a surreal body-horror romance directed by Michael Shanks, which turns a grotesque premise into an intimate study of a failing relationship.

Story & Setup

Together opens with Millie (Alison Brie) and Tim (Dave Franco), a long-term couple who relocate from the city to a quiet rural town, hoping for a fresh start. A seemingly innocuous accident—Tim drinks from a strange spring after a fall—triggers a nightmarish transformation: the pair begin to physically fuse. As their bodies bond, so do the buried resentments and compromises that have hollowed out their love. A cryptic neighbor and hints of folk superstition push the film toward folk-horror beats, but the heart of the tale remains the couple’s unraveling.

Direction & Tone

Michael Shanks approaches the film with a restrained hand, refusing to turn the concept into pure shock value. The director balances grotesque practical effects with patient, character-driven scenes, letting discomfort serve the drama rather than the other way around. The pacing occasionally lingers too long on peripheral mysteries—an undercooked cult subplot keeps the film from fully clicking—but Shanks’s decision to emphasize mood and emotion gives the movie an unsettling, melancholic power.

Performances

Brie anchors the film with a controlled, emotionally naked performance. She renders Millie’s fatigue and quiet rage without melodrama, making even the most physically awkward scenes feel human. Franco’s Tim is convincingly adrift—charming where he needs to be, but pathetically evasive in moments that require growth. Their chemistry sells the absurd premise: when the horror becomes physical, the emotional truths Land. Supporting turns, especially from the mysterious neighbor, add texture even when the script doesn’t fully explain every mystery.

Strengths & Shortcomings

The film’s biggest asset is its willingness to use body horror as metaphor: the physical fusion amplifies the claustrophobia of a relationship gone stale. Practical effects are effective and often horrifying in a quietly believable way. However, the narrative occasionally undercuts itself by introducing elements it never resolves, and a few scenes overstay their welcome, diluting momentum.

Verdict

Rating: ★★★⯪☆ (3.5 / 5)

Together is an odd, affecting love story disguised as a horror film. It won’t satisfy viewers looking for tidy explanations or relentless scares, but as a character-first meditation on intimacy, resentment, and the cost of staying, it’s memorable and brave. Recommended for viewers who like their horror personal and unsettling rather than loud and explicable.
