Colony (2026) [Movie Review] — Yeon Sang-ho Gives the Zombie Genre a Smart New Twist

Colony (2026) is a Korean action horror film that gives the familiar zombie formula an intriguing technological twist. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, best known for Train to Busan, and written by Choi Kyu-seok and Yeon Sang-ho, the movie explores what could happen if an infected population could communicate, learn from mistakes, and collectively adapt to threats. A Zombie Outbreak Inside a High-Rise Facility

The story begins at a biotech presentation held inside a Korean high-rise facility. A company is showcasing a bioengineered mold capable of communicating with itself and regenerating dead tissue. The demonstration takes a terrifying turn when scientist Seo Young-chul deliberately infects himself and attacks the company's CEO.

The infection rapidly spreads through the building, leaving a small group of survivors trapped inside. However, these are not ordinary zombies. The infected creatures can learn from failed attacks and share information with one another, turning every escape attempt into a new challenge.

The Hive-Mind Idea Makes Colony Different

The most fascinating element of Colony is the way its zombies behave. Instead of simply chasing humans through corridors, they gradually understand the strategies being used against them.

The survivors initially discover creative ways to deceive the creatures, using cardboard cutouts and later experimenting with unusual smells such as cologne and antifreeze. These moments give the movie a playful sense of discovery while allowing the characters—and the audience—to understand the rules of this strange outbreak.

The Human Characters Keep the Story Grounded

Among the survivors, Kwon Se-jeong becomes especially important as she begins understanding how the hive mind works. Her observations provide the group with a fighting chance against creatures that are constantly learning.

The performances help maintain the emotional side of the story, particularly as personal relationships and grief begin affecting the survivors' decisions. The presence of Prithviraj Sukumaran, Mohanlal, Malvika Sharma, Kim Hyung-mook, Go Soo, Shin Hyeon-bin and Kim Shin-rock adds further star power to the ensemble.

Where Colony Loses Some Momentum

Despite its creative premise, Colony does not always explore its strongest ideas as deeply as it could. The contrast between collective intelligence among the infected and the individualism of the survivors offers interesting possibilities, particularly around communication, social responsibility, and human connection.

However, the movie frequently moves toward another chase or action sequence before fully developing these themes. Some characters also begin making increasingly questionable decisions, which occasionally makes their survival harder to emotionally invest in.

The second half becomes more repetitive, although the film manages to recover some of its momentum with an increasingly chaotic climax.

Its social commentary could have been sharper, and some of the character decisions weaken the emotional impact. Still, the film succeeds as a stylish and frequently inventive Korean action horror experience.
