DC (2026) [Movie Review] — A Bloody and Stylish Reimagining of Devadas

Arun Matheswaran’s DC is an ambitious Tamil romantic action thriller that takes the emotional foundation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic Devadas and places it inside a gritty world of gangsters, revenge, violence, and redemption. Rather than attempting a straightforward adaptation, the film reimagines its familiar characters and themes through a contemporary action-driven lens. The result is a stylish yet surprisingly emotional film that understands that beneath every act of violence lies a personal reason.

With Lokesh Kanagaraj making an impressive lead-acting debut alongside Wamiqa Gabbi, Sanjana and a strong supporting cast, DC manages to balance explosive action with moments of genuine tenderness.

Lokesh Kanagaraj Brings Intensity to Devadas

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Devadas is a striking departure from the conventional image of the tragic lover. He is a hot-headed gangster whose violent life is shaped by loyalty, personal loss, and an uncompromising sense of purpose. Kanagaraj brings the necessary physicality to the character while also allowing glimpses of vulnerability to emerge beneath his intimidating exterior.

Wamiqa Gabbi is equally effective as Chandra, giving the character both strength and emotional fragility. Her relationship with Devadas becomes one of the film’s most compelling elements because it gradually evolves beyond a simple rescue story. Sanjana also leaves a strong impression as Parvathy, whose brief but emotionally significant connection with Devadas becomes the catalyst for much of what follows.

Romance Gives the Violence an Emotional Purpose

One of DC’s greatest strengths is that its violence rarely feels completely ornamental. The action is tied directly to the characters’ emotional journeys. The explosive sequence before the interval is particularly effective, transforming Devadas’s rage into both an act of rescue and an expression of grief.

This approach is what separates DC from many action films. The bloodshed matters because the audience understands what is driving it. Devadas is not simply fighting because the screenplay requires another action scene; his choices are connected to love, guilt, revenge, and his desire to protect someone who has become important to him.

A Screenplay That Understands Its Characters

The writing by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Franklin Jacob and Arun Matheswaran deserves considerable appreciation. The screenplay consistently attempts to answer the important question of why. Why does Devadas risk his safety for Chandra? Why does Chandra remain beside him despite knowing the dangers? Why does Parvathy open herself up to a stranger? These decisions are gradually explained through carefully placed details and callbacks.

The film does stumble slightly during its opening stretch, moving rapidly between several locations and characters before establishing its emotional centre. Some sections involving Devadas and his companions also become repetitive as their escape plans repeatedly go wrong. Nevertheless, once the central relationships take shape, the narrative becomes considerably more engaging.

Action, Cinematography and Music Work in Harmony

Technically, DC is a confident production. Mukesh G’s cinematography gives the film a rugged and atmospheric appearance, while the production design adds considerable texture to its world. The action choreography is energetic without completely losing sight of character motivation.

The dialogues also contribute to the film’s personality, combining sharp exchanges with moments of emotional weight. Anirudh Ravichander’s background score is another major asset. His fusion of electronic sounds with classical influences gives the action sequences tremendous momentum, although there are moments when the music threatens to overpower the scene itself.

Final Verdict: Stylish, Violent and Surprisingly Tender

DC succeeds because it does not treat Devadas as a story that must be reproduced exactly. Instead, Arun Matheswaran takes its emotional DNA and rebuilds it as a modern gangster romance. The film has a few narrative rough edges, and Bhojraj’s motivation could have been developed further, but these shortcomings do little to diminish the overall experience.

With a committed performance from Lokesh Kanagaraj, strong turns from Wamiqa Gabbi and Sanjana, memorable action, striking visuals and an emotionally grounded screenplay, DC becomes a bloody yet heartfelt cinematic experiment.
