Prohelika (2023) [Movie Review] — Shobnom Bubly Shines in an Uneven Romantic Mystery

Prohelika is a Bangladeshi romantic thriller directed by Chayanika Chowdhury and written by Pantho Shahriar. The film attempts to combine a complicated love story with a murder mystery, creating a narrative filled with emotional conflict, hidden relationships, and unanswered questions.

The story follows Mona, played by Mahfuz Ahmed, who is forced to leave his village following a local conflict. Separated from his elderly parents, Mona finds shelter in the home of Ustad Jamshed. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he develops a romantic relationship with Jamshed's wife, Orpa. When Jamshed suddenly dies, DB officer Sharif Ahmed enters the story to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.

The biggest strength of Prohelika is undoubtedly Shobnom Bubly's performance as Orpa. Given significant screen time and an emotionally demanding character, Bubly makes excellent use of the opportunity.

She portrays Orpa's emotional vulnerability, inner conflict, and complicated circumstances with impressive sincerity. Her performance feels particularly effective during the film's dramatic moments, where she successfully carries much of the emotional weight of the narrative.

Bubly's portrayal adds depth to a character that could easily have been presented in a conventional manner. Instead, she brings a sense of humanity and emotional complexity that makes Orpa one of the more memorable aspects of the film.

Mahfuz Ahmed Makes a Welcome Return to the Big Screen

Prohelika also marks Mahfuz Ahmed's return to cinema after more than eight years following Zero Degree. Although his character Mona does not receive the strongest development during the first half, Mahfuz gradually finds his rhythm as the story progresses.

His performance becomes more convincing after the interval, particularly when the narrative begins exploring the thriller elements more seriously. The actor's natural screen presence remains intact, making his comeback a welcome addition to the film.

However, the chemistry between Mona and Orpa could have been developed more carefully. Since their relationship forms the emotional foundation of the story, a stronger exploration of their connection could have made the romantic conflict more impactful.

Nasir Uddin Khan delivers a convincing performance as Ustad Jamshed, although the character itself could have benefited from greater depth. Rashed Mamun Apu performs adequately as DB officer Sharif Ahmed, who becomes responsible for uncovering the truth behind Jamshed's death.

Other supporting characters have comparatively limited opportunities to leave a major impression. Still, the ensemble serves the overall narrative and helps maintain the film's mixture of romance and suspense.

A Promising Mystery With an Overly Rushed Climax

The central mystery of Prohelika creates curiosity, but the screenplay does not always fully capitalize on its potential. Pantho Shahriar's story contains an interesting premise, yet the mystery's final revelation feels somewhat rushed.

A more carefully structured investigation and stronger buildup could have made the climax significantly more satisfying. Some characters and relationships also needed additional development to make the emotional and suspenseful moments feel more connected.

Nevertheless, Chayanika Chowdhury deserves credit for attempting a different combination of genres and maintaining an engaging atmosphere throughout much of the film.

Music and Technical Work Add to the Film's Appeal

Emon Saha's music is another positive element, with the song “Hridoy Diye” standing out in particular. Sumon Hossain's cinematography captures the film's setting competently, while Ramzan Ali's editing keeps the narrative moving at a reasonable pace.

The technical departments may not deliver anything extraordinary, but they provide adequate support to the story and performances.
