They Will Kill You (2026) [Movie Review] — A Bloody, Wild Horror-Comedy Ride

fdsf

Kirill Sokolov’s They Will Kill You is the kind of action-comedy-horror film that throws every chaotic ingredient into the pot and refuses to slow down. Drawing clear inspiration from films like Kill Bill, Ready or Not, and the unruly spirit of Sam Raimi and Grindhouse, the movie delivers a loud, blood-soaked, and often entertaining ride. It is not a flawless film, and it does lose some steam as it goes on, but there is no denying that it has a bold visual personality and a mischievous sense of fun.

A Dark Hotel with a Deadly Secret

The story follows Asia Reaves, played by the excellent Zazie Beetz, who answers a job ad and ends up at the mysterious Virgil, a New York hotel with a sinister reputation. Something about the place feels wrong from the start, from the disturbing symbolism to the strange rules and the unsettling atmosphere. Once Asia settles in, the film wastes little time revealing that the hotel is controlled by a satanic cult, and the first night becomes a brutal fight for survival.

That setup may sound familiar, but They Will Kill You adds its own outrageous twist by making the attackers effectively immortal. That single idea gives the film permission to go completely off the rails, turning every confrontation into a grotesque, high-energy spectacle.

Kirill Sokolov’s Visual Madness Keeps It Moving

Sokolov clearly enjoys staging action with comic-book flair and splatter-horror excess. Many scenes feel designed like panels from a graphic novel, with exaggerated framing, heightened violence, and a gleeful disregard for realism. The film’s best moments are the ones where it fully commits to that aesthetic, especially in its first major showdown, which is inventive, wild, and genuinely memorable.

The gore is often extreme, but it is presented with such confidence that it becomes part of the film’s style rather than just shock value. That said, the movie’s biggest limitation is also tied to its central gimmick. Once the novelty of the immortal cult members wears off, the action begins to feel repetitive. Because there is so little lasting consequence, the tension weakens, and the film starts to rely too heavily on its own mayhem.

Zazie Beetz Brings the Movie to Life

The real reason They Will Kill You works as well as it does is Zazie Beetz. She is fully committed, physically convincing, and emotionally grounded even when the film around her is spinning into absurdity. Asia is not just an action figure; she has a personal stake in the story, especially because she is trying to save her sister, Maria, played by Myha’la. That emotional thread gives the movie some much-needed heart.

Beetz handles the role with a sharp mix of toughness and vulnerability, and she makes Asia feel like a true action hero. Whether she is fighting in extreme conditions or pushing through the madness with determination, she keeps the audience invested. It is the kind of performance that suggests she could easily anchor a bigger franchise.

Final Verdict: Loud, Bloody, and Fun in Bursts

They Will Kill You is not the most original genre film, and it does borrow heavily from better-known influences. Still, as a rowdy midnight-movie experience, it has enough energy, style, and gore to keep genre fans engaged. It works best as a crowd-pleaser, where its excesses can draw laughs, gasps, and cheers in equal measure.

The film may not have the depth or consistency to become a horror classic, but it does have personality, momentum, and a terrific lead performance. For viewers in the mood for a savage, neon-bright, cult-infested action-horror ride, this one is worth a watch.
