Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay released his novel Pather Dabi in August 1926, focusing on life under the British Raj. Due to its anti-colonial stance and revolutionary message, the British regime banned the book in January 1927—though every printed copy had already sold out within a week. Following the author's death from liver cancer in 1938, the colonial authorities officially revoked the ban the following year, in 1939.
