Set in the pre-internet era of 1987, Conor and his dog Sandy lead a secluded life, immersed in the slow-loading graphics of early Macs and late-night horror movie marathons on glowing TV screens. Everything changes when Conor starts playing OBEX, a mysterious and cutting-edge computer game, only to find himself trapped in a low-tech yet perilous analog world where reality and the game start to merge. Bold and eerie, writer-director Albert Birney’s OBEX is a delightfully offbeat, lo-fi fantasy. Filmed in striking black-and-white, this surreal, nostalgic tale revisits the early days of personal computing while reflecting on the isolation of our hyper-connected modern lives.
