Set in Oregon during the Great Depression of 1933, a war-weary veteran named Samuel Murphy is ripped away from his daughter and imprisoned in a harsh labor camp. Seeking a chance at freedom, he accepts Warden Clancy's offer of an early discharge in exchange for helping traffic a massive load of gold across 100 miles of treacherous terrain. However, as greed and treachery take root among the crew, Murphy is pushed to his absolute limits to determine just how much he is willing to sacrifice to return home to his child.
